Rhetor’s Notebook Post #8

Before class on Monday, your blogging team will need to meet to generate a focus for your team blog. Based upon your shared interests, your task is to identify a topic, issue, or theme around which you can all frame your individual posts. Together, I’d like to you write a proposal for this project and post it here as a comment to our blog. In this proposal, I would like to see you: 1) clearly describe the focus of your team blog and explain how it relates to current debates or discussion on this issue (that is, begin to situate your blog in terms of its kairos), 2) provide a tentative sense of how each individual writer will address this issue and explain what his or her argument might be about it, and 3) give us a sense of the larger significance of this issue and explain how it relates to the notion of the “public good.”

6 comments:

  1. 1) Our group's overall theme is the link between health and the environment.
    2) My piece in this is to analyze the debate on medical marijuana, the use of it as a drug to help people with serious illnesses and its health properties in general.
    3) The issue of medical marijuana is very heated right now so I want to give a factual account of the health factors involved with marijuana and its use as a medicinal drug.

  2. Our subject will be about homelessness and its affects on the Denver economy, surrounding business and communities. We will also research how the Rescue Mission and other organization support and help minimize the effects of homelessness in the downtown area.

    For this, the subject matters are divided into 4 sections as follows;
Eloy: Affects of homelessness to the surrounding businesses
Adam: Rescue Mission and other organizational support
Liam: Affects of homelessness to the Denver economy
David: Affects of homelessness to the surrounding communities

  3. The group's general theme is the issues surrounding public education in Colorado. We will look at the governmental, student, and administrative issues about public education.

Morgan will write about student-based issues in Colorado public schools- this includes bullying and anti-bullying laws.

Jo Jo will write about the effect of No Child Left Behind and the complications of the act with the current issues of public education.

Jessica will write about the effect of the massive budget cuts of K-12 public schools proposed by Governor Hickenlooper and the effect on students and administrators.

  4. Our group will create a blog that focuses on Health in Denver. Because Colorado has consistently been among the "healthiest states" there are often topics and groups of people who are neglected in the public discourse over health in the state and Denver as a city.

Lauren's paper will discuss the controversial needle exchange program designed for the poor and homeless to help stop the spread of disease through needle sharing.
George's paper will explore hunger, those affected by malnutrition and why this is in Denver
Skylar's paper will focus on factors that cause obesity, and why Colorado has such a low percentage of people living above the 'overweight' mark.

With health reform on the national stage and in the minds of Americans, we are aiming at focusing the attention on more local health issues.

  5. For our group project we are going to be writing about health and the environment. Due to us all attending the university of Denver this seems like a very applicable topic. Especially since CO is known for its fresh air and the health of its overall population. The four of us are all taking different approaches to the topic of health/environment. Topics from the effects of medicinal marijuana on athletes, to the current health care system, to restaurants using more organic and healthier/higher quality of food without as many preservatives, to what I will be writing about energy. Not just energy in a broad sense but new types of energy and how they can benefit or hurt the environment and peoples health. I will be most likely focusing on solar energy because both my father and Clay’s father work with energy and I have been told repeatedly that solar energy is the future. I feel this is important because for CO to uphold its clean air and overall quality of the environment I feel that new types of energy especially solar energy will play a crucial role in this.

  6. 1.)Our group will be focusing on health and the environment.
2.)I will be writing about the current health care situation.
3.)Many Americans can't afford health care and suffer because of it. Analyzing why our health care system works the way it does may uncover better alternatives that benefit all American citizens.
